Checkpoint, directed in 1956 by Ralph Thomas for the Rank
Organisation, was a motor racing drama that made glorious use of
Eastmancolour photography to showcase its thin plot. The use of
colour photography increased sharply throughout the 1950s as the
industry attempted to win over the battle with television, which at
that time could not compete with colour images. This film must have
made a marked impression on audiences at the time simply because of
its vivid colour. Viewed now the location footage of the Italian
locations and its abundance of motor racing vehicles add a lot of
extra interest. I believe it was the first feature film to be shot
in colour with a motor racing theme (please correct me if I am
wrong). The film starred up and coming male actors Stanley Baker,
Anthony Steel and Lee Patterson, and James Robertson Justice in a
rare non-comedy role.Sadly this film has only been rarely revived,
and has only been televised on very few occasions.Maybe one day it
will receive a proper dvd release.
